In a recent revelation, documents have surfaced showing that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi was aware of and gave his consent to the India-Sri Lanka maritime agreement signed in 1974, which resulted in the relinquishment of rights to the Katchatheevu Island. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has criticized the DMK for its alleged double standards on the issue and accused the party of not safeguarding the interests of Tamil Nadu.
According to the documents, Karunanidhi was “taken into confidence” and indicated his acceptance of the proposed solution regarding the island. However, he chose not to take a public stand in favor of it due to political reasons. He also assured the foreign secretary that he would keep the reaction “low key” and prevent it from being played up.
The Katchatheevu issue has resurfaced ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with PM Modi leading the BJP’s charge against the Congress for “callously” giving away the island to Sri Lanka. The issue holds significance in Tamil Nadu, as its fishermen often face repercussions for alleged intrusion into Sri Lankan waters.
PM Modi’s revelations have sparked anger among the Indian public and reinforced their lack of trust in the Congress party. The PM shared an RTI reply received by Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai, which shed light on the decision made by the Indira Gandhi government in 1974 to hand over the territory in the Palk Strait to Sri Lanka.
It is noteworthy that the DMK is currently in power in Tamil Nadu and is in alliance with the Congress for the upcoming general elections. PM Modi’s comments have exposed the DMK’s alleged double standards on the Katchatheevu issue, further fueling the political discourse surrounding the island’s ownership.
