The Hon’ble Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Dr. Smt. Tamilisai Soundararajan, has tendered her resignation with immediate effect. The resignation has been submitted to the Hon’ble President of India, as stated by the Raj Bhavan.
Reasons for Resignation
Tamilisai Soundararajan also resigned from the post of Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry following discussions with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national leadership. An official stated that she has been asked to be prepared to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu or Puducherry. This decision was made after informing Prime Minister Modi, who had stayed at the Raj Bhavan on Saturday night.
Possible Political Future
It is speculated that the BJP believes Dr. Soundararajan may have a greater connect with the people of Puducherry. There is also speculation that she might be fielded from one of three seats in Tamil Nadu, including the Thoothukudi seat held by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s Kanimozhi. In the 2019 elections, Dr. Soundararajan contested from this seat but was defeated. She also contested the Chennai (North) seat in 2009 and lost to TKS Elangovan of the DMK. Throughout her political career, she had several run-ins with the Telangana government when the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, whom she accused of not following protocol, was in power. She also contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections three times but was unsuccessful in all three attempts.
